Configuration

Configure Better Files and Better Files React using record-page properties and the shared File Related List Config metadata.

Where settings live

Both components use two configuration locations:

  • Custom Metadata → File Related List Config → Default controls View All columns and filter mode for the org. Both components use this same record.
  • Lightning App Builder controls uploads, thumbnails, file counts, email inclusion, and minimum file size for each record-page component instance.

Record-page settings

Open your record page in Lightning App Builder, then select Better Files or Better Files React to edit its properties. Save the page when you finish. The labels differ between components:

Better FilesBetter Files ReactWhat it does
Accepted File FormatsAccepted file formatsSets comma-separated upload extensions, such as .pdf,.docx,.png.
Allow multiple file uploads at onceAllow multiple file uploadsAllows several files in one upload selection.
Show preview of filesShow file thumbnailsShows available thumbnails on the record-page card.
How many files are displayed on the record pageNumber of files displayedLimits files on the card. Open View All for the full list.
How many files per rowFiles per rowControls the card grid. Narrow regions may stack files vertically.
Show Email Message AttachmentsInclude email attachmentsIncludes eligible files from related emails.
Minimum file size (KB)Minimum file size (KB)Excludes smaller files from the card and View All. Use 0 for no minimum.

Available properties depend on the installed package version. Accepted formats apply to new uploads, not existing files in the list. For React, narrow the supplied extension list as needed; adding an extension does not expand the upload service’s supported formats.

React allows 1–100 files displayed and 1–11 files per row, with defaults of 6 and 3 respectively.

Email attachments

Enable Show Email Message Attachments in Better Files or Include email attachments in Better Files React. Both include files linked to related email messages and carry the setting through to View All.

The email must be related to the record, and the user must be able to access its files. An attachment on an unrelated email will not appear just because its sender is associated with the record.

View All columns

Both components read the shared File Related List Config record for View All columns:

  1. Open Setup → Custom Metadata Types.
  2. Find File Related List Config and select Manage Records.
  3. Edit the Default record.
  4. Choose whether to show Owner, Last Modified Date, Last Modified By, and File Size.

Changes apply to both components across the org. Title and row actions remain visible. The original component’s App Builder settings marked Deprecated no longer control these columns; use Custom Metadata instead.

File type filters

The Filter Mode setting in File Related List Config controls the filter in View All:

  • Basic offers broad categories such as Images and Documents.
  • Advanced offers the file extensions present on the record, such as PDF or PNG.

Choose All files to clear the file-type filter. Search, minimum file size, email inclusion, and Salesforce access still apply.

React application discovery

Better Files React discovers the installed Salesforce application automatically. It does not require a manually configured React URL. If an older installation exposes a React App URL field, that legacy field is ignored by the current implementation.
